Contest Guidelines

Entrants are required to submit a short story based on the theme provided for their category. Short story entries should have a minimum of 500 words to a maximum of 750 words.

 

Who can participate? (Eligibility)

The Short Story Contest is open to all middle school and high school students in Ontario. Eligible high school students consist of students from grade 9 to grade 12. Eligible middle school students consist of students from grade 6 to grade 8.

Judging

Alpha Textbooks does not have any influence on the contest outcome. A committee of teachers will judge the contest entries. Short stories will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • On the theme: has the writer written about the theme in their provided category. High school category theme: Out of time. Middle school category theme: humans and technology.

  • Creativity: How unique is the writer’s approach?

  • Characters: Are the characters well-written?

  • Clarity and organization: Is there a clear beginning, middle and ending?

  • Spelling and grammar.

Formatting

All entries must be submitted in either portable document format (PDF) or as a word document (doc or docx).

The required font for all short stories is Times New Roman, 12 pt font.

Short stories should also be double spaced; approximately two to three pages in total. Each page of your short story should include a page number on the right side of your header or footer section of your document.

For fair selection purposes, all entries must remain anonymous. Entrants should not include their name on their short story document. All entrants are required to put their name and story title on the entry form provided. The title of your short story should also be included on the actual short story document. Refer to the step-by-step instructions section for more details.

 

Entry Forms

All entrants are required to fill out a contest entry form provided by Alpha Textbooks. Entrants are required to fill out all information fields on the entry form. It is mandatory that all entrants under 16 years of age provide a signature from a parent or legal guardian on the entry form.

Entry forms can be completed electronically or by hand. Electronic entries can be scanned or attached.

How to Submit

All entries can be submitted via email or mail.

  • Email: submissions via email must be sent as an attachment. Please attach your pdf or word document and your completed entry form in an email to contests@alphatextbooks.com. Your subject line should be "Short Story Submission-[insert your name]."

  • Mail: submissions sent via mail should include your short story and your completed entry form.

Submission Deadline

All entries must be submitted by December 4, 2015 before midnight (11:59 p.m. EST).
