The Alpha Textbooks Annual Short Story Contest is a not-for-profit initiative launched in 2014 as an effort to empower students by challenging them to actively pursue and achieve their goals. Inspiration to launch the contest arose from Alpha’s renewed efforts in community programming. The company first ran a short story contest in 2006, which at the time was a one-time special event.
The Annual Short Story Contest is an important part of remaining true to Alpha Textbooks’ mission, which involves giving back to communities and cultivating educational opportunities. The Alpha Textbooks team is a big advocate of the language arts, and considers writing to be an integral part of learning.
The contest is open to middle school and high school students (grades 6-12) in Ontario. Students are asked to write a short story using the contest theme for their category; a new theme is provided for both categories yearly. Stories are blind-judged – that means they are submitted to judges as anonymous manuscripts. Winners are selected by a panel of volunteer teachers throughout the winter, and prizes are distributed in the spring.
Together with the contest’s generous sponsors, we hope this worthwhile initiative will help improve the learning experience and the lives of Ontario youth.
